I am interested in discovering methods of increasing at-risk students' attainment rates and the correlation between cultural attitudes about education and incarceration rates.
How Colleges Should be Selecting Degree Programs
Data-Driven Education:
Creating degree or certification programs that are attainable and not cost-prohibitive will enable our at-risk students to be more successful, which will, in turn, benefit our community.
Keep At-Risk Students in School
Between the staggering retention data and having been an at-risk student myself, I became curious what could be done to improve attrition rates. I became passionate about discovering ways to make a difference.
History and Suggestions
Having attended two colleges with very different ideas of student services, I have a keen interest in providing at-risk students the help that they need. One of the schools I attended had services that were easy to access and well-executed. If the other school had programs, I was not aware of them except for the writing center. Many students were given incorrect information as to which classes they needed to take, and services were not readily available. I ended up mapping out my group’s academic plan, which ended up being more efficient than the one our advisors gave us, and we graduated a semester earlier than the original plan had suggested. I would like to help colleges develop programs that are accommodating, easily accessible, and well thought out.
A Cultural Effect
Working in education in the men's prison system made me take notice of the number of under-educated men there. I became curious about the cause and interested in what could be done to prevent it.
